Gary Player is a golfing legend and someone who got to the top of his sport globally at a time when many would have said there were other more naturally gifted players competing. He famously gave the quote “the more I practice the luckier I get” when an onlooker suggested he may have been lucky by holing 3 bunker shots in a row whilst practicing in Texas.
So we hear a lot of people talk about luck and luck does exist and every now and then people can get lucky but have you ever played sports with someone who always seems to get that little bit of luck or worked with someone that always seems to get the results and the little breaks in their favour? I know my friends think I am lucky on the pool table and some people have said to me over the years that I got more than my fair share of lucky breaks as a recruiter…
Are they just lucky people?
In 99.9% of cases the answer is no.
Like Gary Player they will be individuals who have practiced and prepared for that particular situation over and over again so when it happens there is a better chance the outcome will be a positive one.
“The more I practice the luckier I get” is certainly a quote I have repeated over the years. I was probably a bit like Gary Player (not on the golf course unfortunately) when I started my career in IT Recruitment. I was definitely in the “average ability” category and there were people around me who would have been far better qualified, educated and “business prepared” for success in IT Recruitment but what I lacked in those areas I made up for with hard work and dedication. I practiced my techniques as a recruiter over and over and over again to ensure the best chance of a positive outcome for the candidates and clients I have represented over the years. This dedicated approach, learning the skills of my trade and practicing them non-stop made it possible for me to successfully fill over 1,000 IT Jobs and help the careers of more than 1,000 IT Professionals over my 17 year IT Recruitment Career so far…..1,000+ lucky placements?
Interviewing and securing a job is a bit like that. You may know people that claim to have secured every job they have ever interviewed for and that may be true but it is only because they were prepared for every interview, they practiced and gave themselves the best possible chance of success.
It took me five attempts to secure my first role in recruitment. I was a younger man at the time and had plenty of blind ambition but it was the experience I took away from each unsuccessful interview and the practice and preparation I put into the next interview that ensured by the fifth attempt, I nailed it.
If you are inexperienced at interviewing or if you have been unsuccessful with interviews before, the key is to practice and the best place to start is to practice with friends and family. It can feel a little awkward to begin with but talking out loud about your skills and experience will make talking about it in a real life interview so much easier. Ask them to discuss your CV, your career to date and tell them to be tough and take no prisoners. Ask them to probe you for more details by asking you some of the following questions:
- Why did you leave that company?
- Why have you moved jobs three times in the last five years?
- What is your biggest weakness?
- What are your biggest achievements to date?
- What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them or what could you have done better?
The more you test yourself and make mistakes at this stage, the better prepared you will be for the real thing. It’s at the practice stage you want the mistakes to happen, not during the main event!
Walk in confident and positive and if you are enthusiastic and passionate about yourself they might just feel the same and want to hire you!
